Cayucos Near Passive

Originally built in 1949 and used primarily as a beach-shack rental for 75 years, the new owners wanted to rebuild the home to accommodate their family’s year-round use and extended stays. Cairn and the health and energy-focused homeowners worked with interior designer Dana Lossing of Ten Over Studio to incorporate raw, natural materials around the interior of the home including natural white oak, Moroccan clay tiles, unlacquered brass, sheep’s wool insulation, and lime-plaster finishes amongst others.

The beach-front home was entirely rebuilt within the existing footprint following Passive House standards in order to use the smallest amount of mechanical energy possible while simultaneously providing exceptional, year-round interior comfort and health. As a west-facing home and directly on the ocean, interior temperatures remain constant throughout the beautiful, hours-long sunsets via the use of thermally-broken windows with exceptional performance values and use of a continuous filtered-fresh-air circulation system with heat recovery (HRV). Designed and built to be Zero-Net-Energy the home is prewired and ready to be fully powered by just a few photovoltaic panels.
